Although otome can be extremely pleasurable, they are frequently fairly predictable. But that’s not the case with Otomate’s 9 R.I.P. The visual novel is a pleasantly unpredictable experience, alternating between horror, romance, and comedy. Sure, the tone shifts can be abrupt, and in rare cases, disorientating. However, the novel’s four main pathways (technically universes) avoid the typical repetitive narrative pattern, which can be refreshing.
Enjoyably, 9 R.I.P. avoids the generic protagonist syndrome, which is another prevalent otome ailment. Misa Isshiki, an intelligent and pleasant second-year student, is the standard character in most novels. Much of her personality is formed through encounters with her supernatural-obsessed closest friend, Sayaka Hida. However, she is also terribly conflicted about her future, showing the type of vulnerability that is common in folktales and their modern equivalent, the horror genre.

The danger of indecision.
Misa’s protective mother wants her to pursue her late father’s career path by studying medicine at Seigan University. Her older sister, however, was influenced in the same way and went on to become a great merchandiser. Misa’s doubt serves as the spark for 9 R.I.P. to enter the supernatural world. As Sayaka warned her, “confused people or those in distress are more likely to be spirited away.” But here’s the thing: Misa takes charge of each path. This sets her apart from many of her more passive otome counterparts.
An early branching decision in 9 R.I.P. divides the plot into four distinct paths. These main routes are further divided, with two love interests on each path. On my first playthrough, Sayaka’s narration of an urban tale about a sword-wielding amnesiac introduced me to the reputed slaughterer. Alternatively, I could have nuzzled up to Hibiki, a mirror ghost who attracts naive humans. While the subsequent road became a little edgier with its violent husbando, tragedy largely outweighed dread.

As expected, Hell has a corporate presence.
In another playthrough, Misa was subjected to an exorcism. Surprisingly, the outcome was not fear, but rather slice-of-life antics with either a Guardian Spirit or a sassy ghost with tsundere tendencies. Misa’s encounter with an incubus named Minami and a high-ranking official in Hell came as a surprise given the remainder of the game’s light banter. The former flirted with ominousness, whilst the later brilliantly combined romance and satire. But I thought the finest paths were based on the urban legends famous in Misa’s town. A friendly ghost and a deceased idol provided some feel-good sentiments, interspersed with the occasional jump scare and tinge of bittersweetness.
Beyond the periodic jolt, 9 R.I.P. has a number of other advantages. Generally, it keeps its routes brief, preventing lethargy from settling in. Occasionally, the romanceable individuals resurface on other paths, delivering further exposition and creating a sense of completion as you approach your ninth and final route. However, one major omission is a diagram depicting essential decisions and branching paths. With nine love interests, affection options, important decisions, map motions, and selections that can effect Misa’s insanity level, there is a lot to keep track of.
