Shure MV6 USB Gaming Microphone Review.

Shure is a company with a long history of producing high-quality audio equipment; a simple look at their website reveals that its microphones have been utilized by major music industry figures since 1925.

They’ve now used all of their years of experience and knowledge to create the MV6 USB Gaming Microphone, which is aimed at gamers like us. Shure advertises the MV6 as the ideal first professional microphone for gamers and streamers, promising consistent, high-quality audio at an affordable price.

Can a mid-price microphone $149 around really achieve the quality that Shure claims? We’ve tested a lot of gaming mics, so we wanted to see how the MV6 compared.

Shure MV6 Mic in Full

At first appearance, the MV6 appears to lack bells and whistles. It’s a USB microphone with a stand. There is no physical pop filter, you can only change the height by a few millimetres, and there is just one mute button on the top of the microphone; will this be able to compete with more expensive models?

When you pick up the MV6, you can see it’s well-built and has some heft to it, which gives you an idea of how much technology is packed into this inconspicuous device.

The technology includes:

  • Voice isolation technology: The MV6 features a dynamic capsule and a tight cardioid pick-up pattern with excellent rear rejection. This basically implies that it is less sensitive to undesired background noise, allowing the user’s speech to be heard clearly and prominently.
  • Auto level mode: The MV6 intelligently adjusts microphone gain in real time based on your distance from the microphone and speaking loudness, ensuring consistent audio levels up to 45 cm (18”) away. This feature eliminates the requirement for a full-height adjustable stand.
  • The MV6 includes a virtual pop filter that digitally suppresses loud plosive sounds, ensuring smooth audio capture without the need for extra hardware. This technology is based on Shure’s more expensive variant, the MV7+.
  • Real-time denoiser: Reduces background noise such as humming fans and buzzing air conditioners, resulting in a cleaner, more professional sound.

Super easy to use.

For all of its complex technology, the MV6 is simple to use right out of the box. Simply connect the USB-C connector to your PC or phone and start recording.

The MV6 also contains a 3.5 mm headphone output so you can listen to your recordings in real time, as well as a mute button for pausing the microphone.

The MV6’s strong base ensures that it stays in position on your desk, and the microphone can be angled up and down and rotated. You can also rotate the microphone to modify its height somewhat and fully twist it off the stand, which could be useful when recording on a mobile device, though other mics would probably be better suited for this purpose – the MV6 is not exactly lightweight.

There is also the option to download the free MOTIV Mix Desktop App, which has a slew of extra capabilities that experienced streamers and podcasters may find handy, such as the ability to record up to 8 hours of your mixed output or separately record each of your inputs to edit later.

We then downloaded the Motiv App for Android and tried recording audio on our phone with this simplified interface. The software allows you to do rudimentary edits to your video and modify the tone of the microphone from dark to normal to bright (although we couldn’t tell the difference). The program also allows you to enable and disable auto level mode, high pass filter, noise reduction, and popper stopper.
